Building Bridges Through Communication, Education & Inclusion!

DHHSFL Visits Metropolitan Ministries – October 29, 2026

On Thursday, October 29, 2026, Kasey and Carrie from Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services of Florida, Inc. (DHHSFL) had the wonderful opportunity to visit Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa to provide an educational presentation on Deaf and Hard of Hearing awareness, communication accessibility, and inclusion.

During the presentation, we shared valuable information about:

Understanding the Deaf and Hard of Hearing experience

Communicating respectfully and effectively

Recognizing everyday challenges and communication barriers

Creating welcoming and accessible environments

DHHSFL programs, services, and community resources

Connecting individuals and families with DHHSFL through referrals

Communication is more than just hearing words. It is about understanding, respect, dignity, and ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to be heard, seen, and included.

Our goal is to empower community organizations with the knowledge and tools to better serve Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals without leaving anyone feeling isolated, overlooked, or unable to access essential services.

We sincerely thank Metropolitan Ministries for welcoming us and for their commitment to learning, growing, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people they serve.

Together, we are breaking down communication barriers and building a more accessible and inclusive community — one conversation at a time!

A Step Toward More Accessible Air Travel

October 7, 2026 | DHHSFL Community Update

On October 7, Dr. Tracy, Kasey, and Carrie met with Congressman Bilirakis to demonstrate the SeaMe Systems accessibility kiosk, a proposed tool to improve communication access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing travelers. The Congressman tried signing in front of the kiosk and said he would reach out to Tampa International Airport about the proposal.

A gate change or boarding announcement can leave travelers feeling lost when the information is shared only over a loudspeaker. The proposed kiosk could give Deaf and Hard of Hearing travelers another way to ask questions, get assistance, and access important information when they need it.

For Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services of Florida (DHHSFL), this is about giving travelers the same opportunity to stay informed and navigate the airport with confidence and independence.
